Dr. Christopher Joaquim – Licensed Mental Health Counselor · EdD, MEd, MS, LMHC, LPCC (he/him)
Dr. Christopher Joaquim provides couples therapy for Hamilton residents, meeting with partners in person at his Salem office or online throughout Massachusetts. For more than two decades, he’s helped couples communicate more honestly, repair trust, navigate life’s changes, and feellike partners again. Every new couple begins with a free 15-minute consultation.
Hamilton is known for its horse farms, conservation land, and rural New England character. Many couples choose this town because it offers space to build a long-term life while remaining within commuting distance of Boston. Even in a community where life feels slower, demanding careers, parenting, and everyday responsibilities can gradually leave less time for you to focus on your partnership.
My therapy sessions help ensure your relationship grows alongside the life you’re creating. Maybe your conversation is always about work, school pickup, or what’s next on the calendar. Maybe you’re getting along well enough, yet something feels missing.
Or maybe you’ve reached the point where every difficult conversation seems to end exactly where it started.
Couples Therapy isn’t about finding someone to blame. I help both of you understand what’s happening between you two and create a different way forward.
Research by Dr. John and Dr. Julie Gottman, based on more than 40 years of studying thousands of couples, shows that lasting relationships aren’t defined by avoiding conflict. They thrive when partners know how to communicate, repair after disagreements, and stay emotionally connected. For many Hamilton couples balancing careers, family life, and long commutes, therapy provides dedicated time to strengthen those everyday interactions and build a healthier relationship over time.
No two relationships arrive for the same reason, and Couples Therapy shouldn’t assume they do. Some couples are trying to repair a difficult season. Others simply want to protect a relationship that’s important to them before everyday stress begins to change it.
Whether you're newly married, raising young children, or settling into family life, therapy helps couples stay connected while life grows busier.
Many Hamilton residents commute into Boston while others work throughout the North Shore. Different schedules and long days can leave very little time for the relationship itself.
Career changes, retirement, health concerns, caring for parents, or children leaving home can reshape a relationship. Therapy helps couples adjust without losing one another along the way.
Sometimes nothing dramatic has happened. You simply realize you've been functioning as roommates, co-parents, or business partners instead of romantic partners.
Many engaged couples want to strengthen communication before marriage rather than waiting until problems become harder to untangle.
Whether trust was damaged suddenly or eroded over time, therapy provides a structured place to understand what happened and begin rebuilding the relationship.
You don’t have to reach a breaking point before asking for help. Some of the strongest relationships are built by couples who decide they’re worth investing in before resentment has a chance to settle in.
Most couples don’t wake up one morning and decide they need therapy. The relationship changes gradually.
Your conversations have become practical instead of personal. You spend more time discussing schedules than checking in with each other. Or perhaps a major life change has shifted the relationship in ways you didn’t expect.
If several of these feel familiar, I think therapy is worth considering:
Many Hamilton couples come to therapy because they want their relationship to receive the same care and attention they’ve given every other part of the life they’ve built together.
Couples therapy isn’t about deciding who’s right or wrong. It’s about slowing the conversation down enough for both people to understand what’s happening beneath the conflict.
I combine evidence-based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, and strength-based interventions. Together, we’ll identify the patterns keeping you stuck. I’ll help you learn to communicate with your partner more effectively, and develop practical ways to respond differently when challenges arise
A free 15-minute phone conversation gives you an opportunity to talk about what’s been happening, ask questions, and decide whether therapy feels like the right next step.
Early sessions focus on understanding your relationship, how conflict develops, what each partner needs, and what you’d like to be different.
As therapy continues, you’ll practice healthier communication, work through conflict more productively, rebuild trust where needed, and strengthen the relationship in ways that carry into everyday life.
Every relationship changes over time. The goal of couples therapy is to help you understand each other more clearly, communicate more honestly, and navigate life’s challenges as partners rather than opponents.
Whether you’re adjusting to a growing family, balancing careers, rebuilding trust, or simply wanting to feel closer again, therapy offers dedicated time to focus on the relationship you’ve built together.
